Greater Philadelphia Bioinformatics Alliance
Internship Awards

 Program Description
Program description:

The mission of The Greater Philadelphia Bioinformatics Alliance (GPBA) is to accelerate innovation in the life sciences through the application of bioinformatics. One important component of this goal is to build multilevel education and training programs in bioinformatics to develop and maintain a skilled workforce in the greater Philadelphia region. The GPBA Graduate Level Internship Program is designed to provide opportunities for graduate students to take part in real-world bioinformatics projects in academic and industrial environments of GPBA member and partner laboratories. Typically, graduate students will pursue internships after completing a year of class work and prior to starting degree-related research. The pursuit of such opportunities is expected to broaden the base of expertise for this new discipline in the Philadelphia region.

An internship is a full-time (35 hour/week or equivalent) or part-time position with paid compensation, arranged between an eligible graduate-level intern and a participating academic or corporate GPBA partner. Internships are expected to begin on or around September 1'st for the Fall semester, mid-January for the Spring semester, and May-June for the Summer.

Internships may last three months to one year, subject to available funds and any negotiations between the intern and host. The level of support will typically be $2000/month for three to six months of full-time work, or $1000/month for up to one year.

Awards:

Candidates will be selected for partial support in their internships, usually for $1,500/month for up to 6 months. Intern hosts will be required to supply the remainder of the intern salary. The actual number of awardees and award amounts are subject to change at the discretion of the Admissions Committee. Award winners will receive written confirmation of their awards, pending arrangement of an internship which meets GPBA requirements. Awards will be granted directly to the employer upon commencement of the internship.
